Yes, you heard it right!

Effective July 04, 2022, Canada is going to let Parents and Grandparents stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry by Super Visa.

Parents and grandparents may also be allowed to get International medical insurance, therefore spending less on insurance coverage.

Individuals who are currently in Canada with a super visa can extend their stay up to two years, meaning a super visa holder can stay for up to 7 years in Canada.

Approximately 17,000 Super Visas are issued by Canada annually.

2025 Update—Canada’s Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and PRs to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry. Those already in Canada on a Super Visa can apply for an extension of up to 2 additional years, meaning a possible stay of up to 7 years without leaving the country.

Canada issues around 17,000 Super Visas every year, providing a long-term option for family visits. One of the main requirements is having medical insurance that covers healthcare in Canada.

A key change in 2025 is that Super Visa applicants are now allowed to purchase medical insurance from international providers, not just Canadian companies. The foreign insurance must meet Canada’s requirements, including a minimum of $100,000 coverage for healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation. This update gives applicants more flexibility and potential savings on insurance costs.

Additionally, the 2025 Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) will accept up to 10,000 applications. However, due to a backlog, invitations to apply are only being sent to people who submitted their interest forms in 2020.
PGP applications currently take about 24 months to process for most provinces and up to 48 months for applicants applying through Quebec.
