International students, studying online (even 100% and from outside Canada) until August 31, 2022, can be eligible for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) from now on.
The programs must be from Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with a minimum length of eight months.
If the program is more than eight months but less than two years, PGWP will be valid for the length of the program. If it is more than two years, the graduates can get up to 3 years of PGWP.
Changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit program took effect on November 1, 2024. These updates are important for anyone studying in Canada and planning to stay and work after finishing school.
Language Test Now Required
If you’re applying for a PGWP, you’ll now need to show results from an accepted language test. The requirements vary by the type of program you completed:
- If you finished a university program (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD), you’ll need a minimum score that matches the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7.
- If your program was at the college level or another non-university institution, CLB level 5 is the minimum.
The tests you can use include IELTS (General), CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada. Test results need to be dated within the last two years when you submit your application. Without this, your application won’t be accepted.
Certain Fields Only
Anyone whose study permit was issued on or after November 1, 2024, must graduate from a program related to a list of specific occupations. These include jobs in agriculture, healthcare, STEM, skilled trades, education, and transportation. If your program doesn’t fit into one of these, you may no longer be eligible for a PGWP.
If your permit was issued before that date, or you’re in a flight school approved under federal rules, you’re not affected by this part.
Online Learning Rules Are Stricter
If your program begins on or after September 1, 2024, you’ll need to do at least half of your coursework in person and inside Canada. If you study online from outside the country after August 31, 2024, it will shorten the length of the work permit you can receive. That remote study time no longer counts in your favor.
