New Border Measures: Key Travel Information

New Border Measures!

border measures

From November 30, travelers to Canada, aged 12 years and older, have to prove they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Also, fully vaccinated travelers (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) who will be returning within 72 hours are no longer required to do a molecular test for COVID-19 in order to return.

Any traveler going abroad for more than 72 hours will still be required to undergo the mandatory molecular test for COVID-19 before coming to Canada. Canada does not recognize antigen tests, often called “rapid tests,” for this purpose. The accepted vaccines by Canada will be as follows:

  • Sinopharm
  • Sinovac
  • COVAXIN
  • Pfizer-BioNTech;
  • Moderna
  • AstraZeneca; and
  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson

Travelers should be fully vaccinated at least 14 full days before their departure to be eligible to enter Canada.

As of May 2025, travelers entering Canada no longer need to show proof of vaccination for COVID-19. There are no testing requirements before arrival, no quarantine rules, and no paperwork related to COVID at the border.

The ArriveCAN app still exists—it hasn’t gone away—but using it is now optional. Some people still use it to speed things up at customs when flying in, but it’s no longer required.

Face masks are also off the list of must-haves. That said, it’s not a bad idea to keep one handy, especially in tight or crowded spaces like airplanes or trains. It’s a personal call now. While national rules have relaxed, some provinces or territories might still have their own health advice or recommendations. Anyone planning to travel should double-check local guidelines, especially if visiting multiple regions.

If someone has symptoms—cough, fever, or something similar—it’s best to wait it out and see a healthcare provider before traveling. That hasn’t changed.
