Those who expressed their interest in sponsoring their parents and grandparents in autumn 2020 will be drawn by IRCC.
What Are the Eligibility Criteria for The Parents and Grandparents’ Program (PGP)?
You (the sponsor) are eligible if:
- you completed an interest to sponsor form on IRCC’s website between October 13, 2020, and November 3, 2020
- you are at least 18 years old
- you live in Canada
- you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- you have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor
The Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) is this program’s key eligibility factor. The figures below represent the MNI for individuals living in Canada outside the Province of Quebec:
Size of Family Unit | MNI 2021 | MNI 2020 | MNI 2019 |
2 persons | $32,898 | $32,270 | $41,007 |
3 persons | $40,444 | $39,672 | $50,414 |
4 persons | $49,106 | $48,167 | $61,209 |
5 persons | $55,694 | $54,630 | $69,423 |
6 persons | $62,814 | $61,613 | $78,296 |
7 persons | $69,934 | $68,595 | $87,172 |
Each additional person | $7,120 | $6,985 | $8,876 |
In 2024, IRCC sent out a fresh round of invitations, starting on May 21. Over about two weeks, they issued around 35,700 invitations, hoping to receive up to 20,500 completed applications.
The catch? These invitations only went out to those who had already submitted an interest to sponsor form back in 2020. No new forms were accepted, and the deadline to apply was August 2, 2024.
So, if you didn’t already have your name in the hat from the 2020 round, you weren’t eligible for this batch. It was more of a follow-up on past interest than a brand-new intake.
What’s Happening in 2025?
Not much has changed since last year. IRCC plans to accept up to 10,000 new sponsorship applications. But they’re sticking with the same system—drawing names from that same pool of interest to sponsor forms submitted in 2020. That means no new applications are being accepted at this time.
It’s basically a continuation of the 2024 approach, with the focus on making the most of existing applicants rather than bringing in new ones.
It’s worth keeping an eye on IRCC’s updates because, as of now, they haven’t introduced any major changes for 2025. They seem to be managing existing applications rather than opening the doors wider.
