IELTS for Canada: Which Test to Take and What Score You Need

IELTS is the most widely taken English test for Canadian immigration, and the one where a simple mistake costs the most. Booking the wrong version, or missing a band by half a point, can set your Express Entry plans back by months. Language is also the highest-value factor you can actually improve, worth more ranking points than almost anything else in your profile.

Which IELTS Test Do You Need for Canada?

You need IELTS General Training. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake in the whole process, because IELTS Academic results cannot be used for Express Entry no matter how strong they are. If you book the wrong one, you pay the full fee again and lose weeks.

If you need a test for university admission as well as immigration, check what the institution requires. Some will accept General Training, but many ask for Academic, in which case you may need to sit both.

Is IELTS One Skill Retake Accepted?

No, not for Express Entry. One Skill Retake lets you re-sit a single ability instead of the whole test, which sounds ideal when you miss one band by half a point. IRCC does not accept it for Express Entry, so a permanent residence applicant who needs a better Reading score must take the full test again. A small number of programs, such as the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, do accept it. Before you book a One Skill Retake, confirm your specific program accepts it, or you will have spent money on a result you cannot use.

What IELTS Score Do You Need for Canada PR?

The minimum depends on your program. These are the thresholds you must meet in every ability, not on average.

Provincial streams set their own thresholds, so check the requirements of any Provincial Nominee Program you are targeting rather than assuming the federal minimum applies.

Why Every Band Matters

Meeting the minimum makes you eligible. It does not make you competitive. Your effective level is set by your weakest ability, so three strong results and one weak one leaves you at the weak one. This is why a half-band improvement in a single skill can be worth more than broad improvement everywhere else, and why identifying your weakest ability is the first step before booking a retake.

How the IELTS Test Works

IELTS tests four abilities and reports each on a band scale from 0 to 9, in half-band increments. Listening takes about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes, and Writing 60 minutes. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner lasting 11 to 14 minutes, sometimes scheduled on a different day.

The 2026 Move to Computer-Only Testing

IELTS changed how it is delivered in 2026. The test partners confirmed in March 2026 that IELTS would move to computer-only delivery worldwide, and June 27, 2026 was the final paper-based test date in most markets, including Canada. If you sat a paper test before that date, your results remain valid for the full two years and you need to do nothing.

What matters for anyone booking now is that the content did not change. The questions, the Academic and General Training versions, the band scale, and what examiners reward are all the same. Only the medium changed, and Speaking is still a face-to-face interview. The practical implication is about preparation rather than eligibility: on-screen reading and typing under time pressure are their own skills, so practise in the format you will actually sit.

Cost and Booking

IELTS in Canada costs roughly CAD 320 to 360 before tax, and the fee is the same for General Training and Academic. Prices vary by test centre and province and are revised over time, so confirm the current fee when you book. There is no limit on how many times you can take the test and no waiting period between attempts, but you pay the full fee each time. You will usually need a valid passport to register and to enter the test room. Book through an official test centre, listed on the IELTS Canada website.

When You Get Your Results

Computer-delivered results are typically available within one to five business days, which is considerably faster than the roughly thirteen days paper tests used to take. That speed matters if you are working toward a deadline, such as a 60-day window after an invitation to apply.

How Long Are IELTS Results Valid?

Two years from the test date. For Express Entry, your results must be valid at two separate moments: when you create your profile, and when you submit your application for permanent residence. If you apply with expired results, IRCC will refuse the application.

This catches people who sit the test early, spend months in the pool, and are invited close to the two-year mark. If your results will expire before you can realistically apply, either retest, apply before they lapse, or decline the invitation and return to the pool. Should You Retake the IELTS?

A retake is often the fastest way to raise a profile, because language carries more weight than most other improvable factors and results arrive within days. It is usually worth considering when:

• One ability is dragging you down. Your weakest result sets your level, so lifting it alone can move your whole profile.
• You are close to the next threshold. Half a band can be the difference between two benchmark levels and a meaningful points gain.
• Your results are near expiry and you expect to stay in the pool.
• You scored below your practice results because of nerves, timing, or unfamiliarity with the computer format.

It is less likely to help if you are already at the top of the scoring bands, where further gains earn no additional points, or if you have not changed anything about your preparation since the last attempt.
