Fraud Targeting Newcomers

When you first come to Canada, you may not be aware of how businesses or the government work. On the other hand, many fraudsters are aware of this matter and may want to make you the target of their scams. Below, you can learn how to not fall prey to fraudsters and abusers.

1. Fraudsters may contact you on behalf of IRCC or the Immigration, Asylum and Citizenship Department.

You should know that IRCC:

  • Will not contact you by phone to receive fees or any type of fine.

  • Will not threaten you by phone or arrest you and deport you from the country for not paying the fee.

  • Will not threaten to harm you or your family members.

  • Will not ask for your personal information over the phone except to confirm the information you have already given them.

  • Do not require your financial information over the phone.

  • Do not ask you to pay money to the government immediately.

  • Do not require prepayment through credit cards, gifts, or other similar services.

  • Do not threaten to arrest you for not paying your fees.

If you receive any of these suspicious calls from the Immigration Department, do the following:

– Ask the caller’s name and then hang up.

– Contact our official centre and make inquiries to ensure that the call is genuine.

– If you find out that you have been contacted by mistake, contact the police centre of the anti-fraud department

– If your account has been defrauded in this way, report it to the police.

2. Fraudsters may contact you on behalf of the Tax Administration.

In this case:

– Hang up immediately and call the Canada Revenue Agency yourself at 1-800-959-8281 and ask if the call was genuine.

– If you find out that you have been contacted by mistake, contact the police centre of the anti-fraud department.

– If your account has been defrauded in this way, report it to the police.

The important point is that

you may see the number that called you from the (mobile phone ID) section and it seems real to you, but you should know that fraudsters use advanced technologies to fake the call number. Therefore, seeing a contact number like the tax department is not necessarily proof that the caller is legitimate and genuine.
