$85 million is being allocated to Canada Immigration to accelerate the processing of immigration programs by the end of 2022.
According to Minister Fraser, 147,000 decisions on permanent residence will be finalized in the first quarter of 2022. A new Permanent Residence Application Tracker will be introduced in February 2022 for spouses and dependents, allowing applicants to follow up on their applications online.
Canada is also going to allow people to self-administer their Citizenship Oath by signing attestation and celebrating later, resulting in a shorter wait time.
2025 Update—Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continued working through its backlog in early 2025, with some clear movement in both permanent residence and citizenship files. Between January and March alone, nearly 120,000 decisions were finalized. Out of those, over 104,000 led to new permanent residents settling in Canada—a figure that shows the process hasn’t slowed down.
On the citizenship side, the numbers are even more striking. Between April 2024 and March 2025, more than 356,000 people officially became Canadian citizens. That’s a considerable increase from previous years and points to a stronger push to finalize applications that have been waiting for months, if not longer.
People still waiting can track their applications through IRCC’s online portals. These tools aren’t new, but they continue to serve as one of the more reliable ways to check where things stand—especially as official wait times can vary depending on the program and type of application.
