The government of Canada will be allowing entry for extended family members of Canadian Citizens and permanent residents. This decision has been made to help families in Canada unite with loved ones. The following extended family members of Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents would be eligible to travel to Canada under the new process:
Individuals in an exclusive dating relationship with a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for at least 1 year
- Non-dependent children
- Grandchildren
- Siblings(including half and step-siblings)
- Grandparents
These people will not need to demonstrate that they are entering for a purpose that is non optional or non discretionary.
Update—As of February 2025, Canada continues to facilitate family reunification through specific immigration measures. Notably, the special public policy allowing extended family members of Canadians and permanent residents to apply for temporary resident visas (TRVs) remains active.
This policy, particularly aimed at Palestinians residing in the Gaza Strip, permits individuals such as non-dependent children, grandchildren, siblings (including half and step-siblings), and grandparents to join their Canadian relatives.
Applicants must be supported by their Canadian family members for at least one year upon arrival. It’s important to note that this public policy is set to conclude on April 22, 2025, or once 5,000 TRV applications have been accepted for processing, whichever comes first. Therefore, eligible individuals are encouraged to submit their applications promptly to take advantage of this opportunity.
