Starting October 30, travelers who are 12 years and older need to be fully vaccinated for domestic or international travels.
Those who are not vaccinated and the result of their test is positive while traveling, are not allowed to continue their travel or return to where they departed from, unless they spend a 14-day isolation period. Proof of vaccination from the local health centers (or the country of residence), with Canadian government-approved vaccines, will be accepted.
Emergency situations may be exempted from these new restrictions.
2025 Update
As of this year, there are no federal COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for travelers entering Canada. That applies to all modes of travel—air, land, or sea. The rules that once required proof of vaccination, test results, or quarantine have been removed and haven’t been in effect since late 2022. Nothing new was added to replace them at the national level.
Even though those restrictions are gone, public health authorities still recommend vaccination, especially for people who face higher risks from the virus. According to updated advice from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), adults over 65, people with certain health conditions, and residents in long-term care are among those who should receive one COVID-19 shot per year.
There’s a different recommendation for those over 80 and for people with weakened immune systems—they’re advised to get two doses annually. The timing of these doses may vary depending on where someone lives since provinces and territories now manage their own vaccine rollout plans.
That shift in responsibility—from federal to regional governments—means that vaccine scheduling and availability will be decided locally. People are encouraged to check their provincial or territorial health websites to stay up to date on timing and eligibility.
Also worth noting: vaccination rules outside of Canada are still in place in some countries. Travelers should check what’s required before flying out.
