Applicants who have representatives can apply online for citizenship, however, representatives cannot apply on behalf of the applicants.
Applications need to be completed, signed, dated and submitted by the applicants and representatives are able to give advice and help to complete the forms and communicate with IRCC.
In 2022, IRCC will open the online applications to:
Families
Minors
Representatives to apply on behalf of their clients, and
Clients who are declaring residence outside of Canada as a Crown servant or with a Crown servant family member.
As of 2025, most people applying for Canadian citizenship can now use the online system. That includes families and minors, who previously had to use paper forms. It’s still not available, though, for those applying as Crown servants or family members living abroad with one—they’ll need to stick with the traditional method for now.
You still have to handle the submission yourself. Even if someone is helping you out, like an immigration representative, they can’t press send on your behalf. The application must be signed and submitted directly by the applicant. You’ll also need to create your own online account before you get started.
Fees have gone up, too. Since March 31, adult applicants are paying $119.75 instead of the previous $100. It has to be paid online, and yes, you still need to include the receipt with your application.
Once your paperwork is in, you’ll wait. The timeline can shift depending on the case. Some are straightforward, others are not so much. After Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada sends you an acknowledgment, you’ll be able to track your application online. That’s the cue that the process is moving.
