Canada Processes Work Permits Faster For TV And Film Workers

Some of the most popular films and TV series have been filmed or partly filmed in Alberta, such as Interstellar, Ghostbusters, Fraggle Rock, The Last of Us, and Fargo.

Alberta has recently announced further investment in Film and TV business. $70 million for the Film and Television Tax Credit Program from 2022 to 2023 and $225 million from 2024 to 2025 are included in Alberta’s budget, meaning more opportunities for the province. Alberta aims to reach $1.5 billion in the film sector by 2032.

A work permit class has been designed to let production staff and Film crew members work in Canada. An essential staff may be exempt from LMIA. “Essential” can be interpreted widely, on a case-by-case basis.

Those workers who need an LMIA may be granted an expedited process, with no need to advertise the position.

Updates as of 2025

1. Changes to the Film and Television Tax Credit (FTTC) Program

In mid-2024, Alberta introduced new rules for its Film and Television Tax Credit. Productions are now able to apply up to 120 days after starting principal photography in the province, giving teams more breathing room.

Filming in rural or remote regions of Alberta can unlock a 30% tax credit rate, an increase from the typical 22%. Game shows and reality TV programs have also been added to the list of eligible productions.

Applicants now have two options regarding their tax credit certificates: one certificate after production wraps up or multiple certificates tied to the tax years when costs were incurred.

2. Updates to the Alberta Made Production Grant (AMPG)

The Alberta Made Production Grant continues to back smaller projects with a funding structure that covers 25% of eligible production costs up to $125,000. Productions can also access an additional $35,000 to support on-set training and mentorship opportunities, helping newer workers gain experience directly on Alberta film sets.

3. Film Sector Emphasis in Alberta’s Strategic Plan

The province’s 2025–28 Strategic Plan names the film and television sector as an important area for economic growth. According to the government, every dollar invested by Alberta results in four dollars spent back into the provincial economy by the industry. The tax credit programs and production grants remain central tools for encouraging more film projects to choose Alberta.
