There are currently two English tests; IELTS and CELPIP and two French tests TEF and TCF for the purpose of evaluating the language proficiency of immigration applicants.

However, a new language test has been approved by IRCC for economic class immigration applicants.

The name of this new language test has been revealed yet. IRCC intends to increase the number of language test provider organizations to obtain the designation.

2025 Update—Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has added a new English language test to its list for economic class immigration. As of 2025, applicants can now take the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core in addition to the CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training.

For French, the accepted options remain TEF Canada and TCF Canada. These tests check how well applicants can communicate in either official language.

The change gives people another option when preparing their applications. Depending on how things unfold, more testing organizations may be approved in the future. For now, the PTE Core joins the list as an approved English test for immigration to Canada.
