Approved Vaccines in Canada

All travellers, essential or non-essential, have to be fully vaccinated to enter Canada, starting January 15, 2022. The final dose must have been received by the travellers at least 14 days before entering Canada.

However, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will not be denied returning to Canada. But they will have to meet the test and quarantine requirements.

Approved vaccines in Canada are:

  • AstraZeneca
  • Bharat Biotech
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • Moderna
  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • Sinopharm BIBP
  • Sinovac

2025 Update—Starting in 2025, entry requirements for travelers heading to Canada look quite different than they did a few years ago. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is no longer needed. There’s also no need to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test before entering the country. These changes apply across the board.

ArriveCAN is still available, though using it is entirely optional. If you’re arriving at certain airports, the app’s Advance Declaration feature may help you move through customs faster, but you don’t have to use it.

Masks are no longer required on planes or trains. However, federal public health officials still recommend wearing one in crowded indoor areas, especially for those at higher risk.

As for vaccinations themselves, Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) released updated guidance for 2025 through summer 2026. COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for everyone aged 6 months and up, with particular attention to:

  • Adults 65 and older
  • Residents of long-term care and similar settings
  • People with certain underlying medical conditions
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Members of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities
  • Health care workers and caregivers

One COVID-19 shot per year is the current recommendation for most people who’ve already had their initial series. But some will need two doses per year, with at least three months between them. That group includes:

  • Adults aged 80 or older
  • Adult residents of long-term care homes and other senior living facilities
  • People 6 months and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised

As of 2025, the vaccines available in Canada target the JN.1 and KP.2 strains of the virus. These are the variants most commonly circulating.
