The Canadian immigration system saw some important changes in 2025 worth paying attention to. One of the most talked-about updates is the new category-based selection process in the Express Entry system. Instead of just ranking candidates based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, the system now considers specific occupational categories. This change is meant to fill gaps in the labor market more effectively.
The 2025 categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM fields (like engineering and technology), trades, agriculture and agri-food jobs, and education roles. This shifts the focus towards targeting candidates who can immediately fill critical workforce needs.
Another big change is that points for job offers are no longer part of the CRS. This was a major factor in previous applications, giving up to 200 points for a valid offer. Now, job offers can still support eligibility under certain programs, but they don’t give that extra points boost. It’s a move that changes how candidates assess their qualifications and eligibility.
