What a category-based round is

Express Entry manages candidates through three distinct round types. These formats include general rounds, program-specific rounds, and category-based rounds.

In a category-based round, the Minister sets a specific category to meet an economic objective. Candidates must meet the category requirements and be eligible for one of the three core Express Entry programs.

Who the Trades Occupations category is for

This category targets candidates with work experience in skilled trades occupations.

The label 2026-Version 3 indicates that the governing Ministerial Instructions have been updated since the category first began. It does not mean this is the third invitation round held for trades.

Why the CRS cut-off is 476

The score threshold of 476 stands lower than standard general rounds. Why does this occur?

Category-based selections filter candidates from a smaller pool than broad invitation rounds. Because fewer individuals qualify for the specific trades criteria, the department invites candidates with lower point totals to meet its 3,500 target.

What the tie-breaking rule means

The tie-breaking rule resolves ranks when multiple candidates hold the lowest cut-off score of 476. The selection relies on profile submission timestamps.

Candidates with a 476 score received an invitation only if they submitted their profile before May 28, 2026 at 16:55:23 UTC. Those who registered later were not chosen.

This tie-break timestamp occurred four months before the round. That gap indicates a large group of applicants held exactly 476 points in the pool.

What happens next for invited candidates

Candidates who received one of the 3,500 invitations hold an official Invitation to Apply. They now have a limited deadline to submit a complete permanent residence application.

Applicants must supply civil status papers, background checks, and proof of work experience. Missing the filing window cancels the invitation.
