a negative covid 19 test is no longer needed

Vaccinated travelers do not need to show a negative COVID-19 test to enter Canada, beginning April 1st.

Vaccination requirements are still in place for people entering Canada, with very few exemptions for Ukrainian citizens, temporary foreign agricultural or food industry workers, and people who regularly cross the border for work.

Travelers who are not vaccinated or are not fully vaccinated will be required to do the test and quarantine for 14 days.

Proof of vaccination must be uploaded in ArriveCAN. Accepted vaccines for being considered as fully vaccinated are:

  • AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD
  • Bharat Biotech
  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson
  • Moderna
  • Novavax
  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • Sinopharm BIBP
  • Sinovac

COVID-19 Travel Rules for Entering Canada (2025 Update)

Canada scrapped all COVID-19 border measures back in October 2022. Since then, travelers have been able to enter without showing proof of vaccination, without testing, and without quarantining. No ArriveCAN form needed either — it’s been optional for quite a while now.

That said, public health officials still encourage people, especially those more vulnerable, to stay up to date with vaccinations. According to the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), certain groups should seriously think about getting their COVID-19 shots regularly:

  • Adults aged 65 and older
  • Residents in long-term care homes or other shared living spaces
  • People with health conditions that make serious illness more likely
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Members of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities
  • Racialized communities and other groups often facing health care barriers
  • Healthcare workers and caregivers

For most adults who have already had some COVID-19 vaccinations, getting one booster per year is what’s suggested now. But for a few — like those aged 80 and over, people living in long-term care, and anyone with a weakened immune system — two doses each year are recommended.

Even though rules at the border have relaxed, staying informed remains important. Public health advice can shift, especially if new variants appear or if overall conditions change. It’s always smart to check in with official government updates before planning a trip.
